Picked up quite a few mentions of this today via Twitter - a similarly named tool to the excellent http://www.dropbox.io but extremely useful for teachers:

http://www.dropbox.com

Essentially it is a folder that is synchronised with other computers - so you can have it on your home PC, work laptop and suchlike and the files will be shared across the computers. Ideal for teachers as you can create a resource on your home computer, drag it to your dropbox and then access it from school.

See "Why every teacher needs a drop box account" - http://www.edgalaxy....ox-account.html

This is similar functionality to the backup tool that I use on our main PC - Carbonite as there I can login and access backed up files from the PC - but Dropbox seems to offer additional ease of access. It will be interesting to see how well it works via school networks- I'll give it a try and report back.

Thanks for the info from @4goggas @dannynic @NMHS_Principal & @ShellTerrell

I have also read a lot of tweets and blogs recently about dropbox. So I to decided to check it out.

It is a fantastic little program that sits in your toolbar. I have recently been working on yet another set of school reports. Instead of losing the memory stick I have placed the item in dropbox and it automatically syncs with my office computer, laptop, and home pc.

I would recommend it for all teachers

J

and no I am not on commission and yes it is a free product offering 2GB of online storage for free.

This sounds interesting.

Could it be used as a class drop box? IE, if you create a class account and have students dropping their electonic work into it. This would be quite a good way of getting work off students rather than the memory stick method, or setting up a shared drive.

Cheers,

James

It certainly could be, but as you'd need to give them write access they would be able to delete / adapt other students' work as well. Plus there wouldn't be any inbuilt tool for assessment. Much better to use a VLE to get students to submit work and then give you control how to mark and feedback.
